Maisie twirled into her friend Rosie's birthday party, her curly auburn hair bouncing everywhere. There were balloons, ribbons, and a big plate of rainbow cupcakes with sparkly sprinkles on top. Maisie took a giant, happy bite. But then — wiggle, wiggle! Something moved inside her mouth! Maisie's hazel eyes went wide.

"What is it?" Maisie whispered to Rosie. She poked at her tooth with her tongue. Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle! Maisie felt a tiny flutter of nervous in her tummy, the same flutter she got before trying anything new. So she did what always helped — she twirled! Round and round in her mustard cardigan, until the nervous feeling turned into giggles.

Wiggle, wiggle, POP! Out came the tiniest, whitest tooth, right into Maisie's palm. It sparkled like a little star. Everyone cheered! That night, Maisie showed Nana Lou on the phone, and Biscuit the cat curled up close to admire it too. "I was nervous," Maisie said with a gappy grin, "but trying always helps me feel brave."
A question for afterwards
Can you think of a time you felt a little nervous but tried something anyway, just like Maisie?
