Femi came over Saturday and the two of them had the whole afternoon together, which mostly went fine. But Tolu would not go down the little slide at the park while he was watching. She climbed up four separate times and came back down the steps every time. Then right at the end, after he'd already run off to the swings, she went down it on her own and looked around for someone to have seen it.

Tolu sees a door. A little round door. It is in the garden wall. It is just her size.
She looks. She looks a long time.
Kayin runs up. "Open it! Open it!"
Tolu shakes her head. She steps back. She steps back again.
Kayin waits. Kayin waits.
Then Kayin runs off. Off to the swings. Off, off, off.
Tolu is alone. Just Tolu. Just the door.

The door swings open. Inside is a tiny room. Tiny chairs. Tiny cups.
Tolu picks up a pebble. She puts it in a cup. In it goes. Plink!
Tolu sits back. She smiles a big smile.
She did it. All by herself. All, all by herself.
